Police are working to formally identify the woman killed in a bus crash near Tongariro.

Police investigations and welfare work continuing following Saturday's bus crash on Ohakune Mountain Rd, says Whanganui Area Commander, Inspector Sue O'Neil.

"Due to the nature of the injuries sustained by the young woman who died, formal identification is expected to take further time.

"Therefore, we are not anticipating to be in a position to release her name," says Sue in a statement released on Sunday evening.

"This is a distressing time for the family of the deceased and others who were injured, and police and Victim Support will continue to comfort them."
