Update 3pm: A vehicle, towing a trailer, has crashed into a barrier and blocked a lane on State Highway 2 beneath the Sandhurst Drive overpass.

A police media spokesperson says the crash was reported at 2.30pm.

"It appears a car has hit a barrier and a trailer has come loose, blocking traffic on the northbound side of State Highway 2.

"There are no reports of injuries at this stage."

NZTA says the left hand shoulder only is open, allowing traffic to slowly pass.

It recommends using Te Puke Highway and Welcome Bay Rd as an alternative route.

Reports are coming that a trailer has rolled on SH2 near Bay Park.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the crash has happened in the northbound lane between Sandhurst Drive and the Te Maunga roundabout.

"It's happened just down the road from Bay Park arena, below the Sandhurst Drive overpass.

"The trailer looks as though it's rolled, the lanes are blocked and traffic is building in the area."
