Man in hospital after inhaling chemical fumes

A loader driver has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after inhaling chemical fumes at a fertiliser plant near Te Puke.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand communications shift manager Scott Osmond says fire have been called twice to the Ravensdown factory on Station Road today.

'They're loading and bagging urea at Ravensdown, which is a fertiliser.

'There are some smells coming off it which have been reported to us.

'We initially attended the scene at 8am."

He says crews were called back to the scene when a loader driver collapsed from the fumes.

A police media spokesperson says police were advised of the incident at 10am.

"One person was taken to hospital in a serious condition."

Scott says anyone affected by the smells should close their doors.

'If you are having trouble breathing call 111 immediately.”

WorkSafe has been notified.
