UPDATED 9.01AM: One person has been seriously injured after a car and train have crashed in the Bay of Plenty.
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 30, near Otakiri, shortly before 8.30am.
A police spokesperson says one person, the sole occupant of the car, has been seriously injured.
The NZTA says the road is closed between SH34 and Onepu Springs Road.
"Emergency services are on site. Please delay your journey or use an alternative route."

Reports are coming in of a train crash in the Bay of Plenty.
A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says police are at the scene of a crash near the train tracks on State Highway 30, in Otakiri.
"It looks like the car has been hit by a train and there doesn't appear to be any other vehicles involved.
"The driver of the car is being treated by St John Paramedics at the scene.
"There is heavy fog in the area, making it hard to see things clearly."
The caller says motorists travelling in the area can expect delays.
