Road reopens following Waihi sinkhole discovery

Trig Road South, Waihi has reopened to traffic following the impact of a large tomo which caved in underneath the road more than a week ago.

Tarseal on the road collapsed on the evening of June 19, leaving an opening almost two metres wide and plunging down up to five metres.

In a media statement released last night Hauraki District Council says there is still work to be done.

"A 50km/hr speed limit is in place, but motorists can once more take the Trig Road South way home.

"Work to clean up the site and reinstate fencing will continue on Monday. The road will be left unsealed for a month and the speed restriction will stay in place to allow for settling and monitoring of the new section of road.

"Thank you for your patience and understanding while we've carried out this work"
