Motorists travelling around the Bay of Plenty are being urged to drive cautiously following reports of black ice on some of the region's roads.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says conditions are a bit sleek on State Highway 36, between Tauranga and Rotorua, but if people reduce their speeds, they should be fine.

Tauranga residents woke to single digit temperatures this morning, with one SunLive reader reporting two degrees when she got into her car at 6.30am.

A police spokesperson says there was one crashed reported to them this morning as a result of black ice.

"A crash was reported on the Oropi Gorge Road.

"A car skidded on the ice near Pyes Pa Road at around 7.21am. No injury, the road wasn't blocked."

Further a field, police are warning motorists across Taranaki to be extremely cautious on the roads this morning following a number of a crashes caused by ice on the road.

There have been four car crashes in the area since 5am due to the conditions, says a police spokesperson.

"At around 5.15am a car rolled on Mawhitiwhiti Road in Okaiawa, the woman driver has been taken to hospital via ambulance to be checked over.

"At 6:35am a vehicle crashed into a fence on Broadway in Stratford and rolled onto its side. The male driver is being checked over by ambulance.

"As well as this, police received a report that two cars had crashed off South Road, at Tokaora, after hitting ice. One ended up in a ditch, the other in a paddock. Neither driver was injured. Motorists need to take extreme care when driving across Taranaki this morning.

"Any patches of road which appear wet will likely be ice and should be treated as such. Police are also advising people to check their vehicles and tyres are roadworthy and ensure all windows are completely clear of ice before getting behind the wheel."
