One person has died and another has serious injuries after a two-car crash on State Highway 2 at Waitakaruru, in the Waikato District.
Emergency services were notified just after 11am.
Police say three other people involved in the crash have moderate injuries.
A helicopter was attending the scene, and the Serious Crash Unit is on the way.
Diversions are in place off State Highway 2 at Mangatawhiri Road and at State Highway 25.
