Man fatally struck by vehicle in Tauranga

UPDATED: Takitimu Drive, near the 15th Ave overpass, is now open following a fatal crash earlier this morning.

A pedestrian was hit by a truck on the highway just before 4.30am.

The man died at the scene.

The serious crash unit is investigating the crash.

EARLIER:

A pedestrian has died after being hit by a truck on Takitimu Drive in Tauranga this morning.

It happened around 4.40am near the Fifteenth Ave overpass.

Takitimu Drive is blocked from Elizabeth Street in the north, says a police spokesperson.

"Any Waikato-bound traffic will need to divert through Maungatapu along SH 29A, or along Cameron Road throught Tauriko.

"Traffic coming into Tauranga from Bethlehem or Tauriko is not affected."

The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance and will be investigating.

The Fatal death and blocking off Takitimu express way with the resulting grid lock shows another example of poor traffic planning by our council. If there were on ramps at 11th and/or 17th it would have lessened traffic congestion. Is there a plan to complete Hirini?

We have more deaths from suicide here than road deaths, why are we hiding these and doing something about it, it saddens me that housing is now unattainable for any young person, how many more will walk the road?
