Tauranga Police says alcohol and showing off is to blame for a ute crashing into a fence and house in Tauranga.

A Mazda ute crashed into the house with such force it could not be removed as it would collapse the building, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manger acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter.

Wayne says the driver of the ute in the crash on Russley Drive on Saturday night was driving with excess breath alcohol and showing off a new vehicle.

He says the driver, who was uninjured, had a breath alcohol level of 533 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

The legal limit is 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
