UPDATED 11.30AM: Traffic heading to Maungatapu is being diverted from Baypark after a crash near the Maungatapu Bridge.

Diversions are also in place at the Maungatapu roundabout for traffic travelling towards Baypark.

A SunLive photographer at the scene of the crash says a car has come down to join the highway from the end of Maungatapu Road and 'gone straight up into a bank'.

A police spokesperson earlier said two vehicles were involved.

EARLIER:

A crash has left one person in a critical condition and forced State Highway 29A from Maungatapu to Baypark to close this morning.

Police were called to two-vehicle crash at around 10.42am.

A police spokesperson says the accident occurred at the highway on ramp at the end Maungatapu Road, near the bridge.

She says one person is in a critical condition, and that southbound traffic heading to Welcome Bay is being diverted.

She says the Serious Crash Unit is on the way, which means both lanes of the highway will likely close soon.

A SunLive photographer on his way to the scene says traffic is being diverted away from the highway at Baypark, and he expects the road will close there.

This is not on guys something has to be done about this maungatapu bridge and highway .The bridge is way too narrow for the flow of traffic. Not sure why accidents keep happening on this bridge maybe its people just not watching the road or their speeds the speed what is is at the moment is way too fast I am an occupant of a car that crashed on here .We have already had one fatal and we don't need any more so this seriously needs to be put in front of the council before we lose another loved one.

There is nothing wrong with the bridge. I drive a truck that is 2.4 meters wide and have no problems crossing the bridge even when other 2.4 meter trucks come the other way. If you are having problems Dhart then you should hand your license in immediately.

It didnt occur on the bridge,

and the picture clearly tells you where it occurred and like a lot of accidents you wander why, as for the bridge it might be old and narrow but it works unless someone crosses the centre line which is down to driver error not the road.............
