Brookfield residents will now have one less stress, following the implementation of glass recycling bins outside of Brookfield New World.
The bins are the only ones of their kind in the Brookfield area where people can dispose of glass items for free.
The bins are yet another response which come after Waste Management's decision to cease its kerbside glass collection in Tauranga.
Store owner/operator Brendon Good says the bins fill a gap for the Brookfield area.
'I was just solving a problem for our customers. Obviously the ability for people to put glass in their recycling bins has been taken away.
'We're an environmentally-conscious business and we were concerned about the fact glass was going to end up in the landfill, so this is our solution to that.
'When customers come to do their shopping they can now drop their glass recycling off at the same time.”
Brendon says it's working out well so far.
'When we first implemented it we put it on our Facebook page and the post had hundreds of comments from customers thanking us for solving the problem for them.
'We're collecting about 1000kg of bottles a day it's amazing.”
Brendon says the bins have been moved from the first location they had originally been set up at.
'When we originally put the bins in place we didn't consider the amount of noise it would create, and the nuisance it would cause to neighbouring properties.
'A few of them have young families and we have people coming to use the bins at all hours of the night. As a result we've since moved them.”
He says all customers and local residents are welcome to use the glass recycling service.

Great initiative BUT I suspect a monitoring camera and light will be needed 24/7, perhaps accessible by the community to watch? Free security service. A willingness to track illegal dumpers and return their rubbish to their driveway would be great!
