UPDATED 10.20AM: State Highway 29 has been closed between Hopkins Road and Hinuera Road following a serious crash.

At least five people have been injured in a three-car crash near Hinuera in the Waikato this morning.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Hopkins Road and State Highway 29 at around 9am.

A police spokesperson says the intersection is blocked, with the fire and ambulance services also in attendance.

She says the patient shave ‘moderate to serious' injuries, and a helicopter has been called.

A SunLive reader who drove past the crash earlier this morning describes the cars as 'really smashed up'.
