The NZ Transport Agency is warning motorists to be patient on the roads as people head away for Labour Weekend – congesting the city's roads.
Traffic is building up on Cameron Road, with road works adding to the chaos.
Traffic is building up along Cameron Road.
Traffic down Devonport Road is also at a crawl with motorists being asked to be careful.
NZTA's state highways manager Tommy Parker says there is added congestion as people head to Auckland in preparation for the Rugby World Cup finals weekend.
'People need to take care when they drive through construction zones.
'Speed restrictions will be in place, and they should be observed to ensure safety on highways.”
People are also being advised to take care when travelling along State Highway 25 in the Waikato where the Kopu Bridge near Thames is being replaced.
'Although many people are already away because of the school holidays, traffic will be heavy on our state highways as others take advantage of the first holiday weekend after winter.”
Tommy says the NZTA will do everything it can to keep traffic flowing smoothly on the motorway network in Auckland.
'Tow trucks will remain parked near the harbour bridge to respond quickly to clear any vehicle breakdown, and we will be will using our motorway electronic messages boards to keep drivers informed of traffic conditions ahead,” he says.
'To reduce the risk of being caught in congestion or being delayed by having to find a place to park, we would encourage people to use buses or trains, or walk the fan trail to Eden Park.”
Police Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Holmes says police will also have a strong presence on the regions roads.
'Speed is often a key factor in many crashes and the TV ads are quite correct in saying, ‘The faster you go, the bigger the mess'.
'Anyone caught speeding can expect to be held accountable.”
Mark says police will be applying the national holiday weekend speed tolerance of 4km/h and asks drivers to plan their journeys and be patient.
