A woman has died after the vehicle she was driving plunged into a stream.

Emergency services were removed a vehicle from a stream following the fatal crash on Tahe Road, Mangakino, in the Otorohanga District.

Police were called to the scene around 4pm.

"The driver - a woman - was found dead in the vehicle, which was upside-down in the shallow stream.

"The passenger - another woman - managed to get out of the car to raise the alarm."

The serious crash unit is investigating.

"Family of the deceased have have been advised."
