Opportunists and holidaymakers will be filling the roads soon as many make their way home after the long weekend.

There are a few road closures and congested areas to watch out for as you drive to, from, or around the Bay.

NZTA reports that SH29 Kaimai is likely to be packed with Westbound traffic from 10.30am right through until 6pm tonight, based on previous years travel patterns over this long weekend.

SH2 between Paeroa and Waihi westbound is expected to be supporting its heaviest traffic flow between 10.30am and 2.30pm today.

SH2 between Tauranga and Katikati eastbound traffic is expected to be not too bad - with moderate traffic predicted between 11am-4pm today.

Road works will slow traffic travelling along SH36 Tauranga to Ngongotaha, SH36 at Oropi Gorge Rd and SH36 at Oropi Gorge intersection.

NZTA reports that SH25 Whitianga to Tairua and SH2 Maramarua, Mangatarata Eastbound are both experiencing heavy traffic congestion.

SH25 Whitianga to Tairua is busy for southbound traffic and NZTA advises that roadusers should be prepared to expect delays.

SH2 Maramarua, Mangatarata westbound should ease around 8.30pm tonight, and eastbound traffic is predicted to slow from about 9pm.
