A woman is dead after a crash between a car and a campervan in the Coromandel area.

Rescuers tried to resuscitate the 35-year-old woman who was trapped in the wreckage of her car but she died at the scene of the collision on State Highway 25 at Whenuakite late Wednesday night.

The car she was driving and a campervan carrying a German family crashed head-on on the highway between Pumpkin Hill and Whitianga about 10pm, says Waikato police Senior Sergeant Simon Cherry.

The driver of the campervan, a German man, was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition, he says.

His two children and wife were taken to Thames Hospital with moderate injuries.

The serious crash unit is investigating the crash.
