A moderate earthquake has hit near White Island just before 12pm.

The 4.8 magnitude quake was recorded at 11.59am.

GeoNet says the shaking was strong and the quality of the eathquake was good.

It was 14km deep and a was centred 10km east of White Island.

Since the intial 4.8 quake, GeoNet has recorded about five others .

The latest was a 3.3 10km east of White Island at 12.17pm.

Before that was a 3.5, a 3.1 and a 3 - all within the same area.

They ranged from 5km deep to 10km deep.
