A series of earthquakes have struck off the coast of the Bay of Plenty this evening.

The first quake was a 4.8 magnitude, reported just off White Island by Geonet, followed in quick succession by a 4.7, and a few minutes later by a weaker 2.7 magnitude.

Several people from the Papamoa area reported feeling the quake on social media.

The Bay of Plenty Civil Defense have said there is no threat of a tsunami from the quake, after several residents expressed fears about one.
