Tourism spending for Bay of Plenty is estimated to be $1.8 billion for the year to September 2017, according to the latest monthly regional tourism estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
In the year to September 2017, international visitors spent $615 million, up eight per cent compared with the year to September 2016, while domestic tourism was up five per cent to $1.2 billion in that period, says MBIE manager of sector trends Mark Gordon.
"When it comes to the monthly expenditure, tourism spend in Bay of Plenty for the month of September 2017 is up six per cent compared with the month of September 2016," says Mark.
The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates are developed by MBIE in consultation with tourism industry representatives to create a better measurement of the value of tourism by region.
'Visitor spending information for the regions helps inform investment and planning in the tourism industry by providing insight into where both domestic and international tourists are spending their money,” says Mark.
'Our figures are based on card transaction data. Users can filter the data to get the information they need, including breaking it down by year, key areas within regions, country of origin, and tourism product groupings such as accommodation, transport and retail sales.”

The Facts

The facts are that the Bay of Plenty quoted in the article includes Rotorua which is the second most popular tourist destination in New Zealand. It also includes Whakatane, Opotiki, some of Taupo and all that in between. Tourism Bay of Plenty have very little if anything to do with the tourism in these areas and does very little for Tauranga except attempt to fool the unwary by suggesting, as this article does, that they are the tourism power house for the Bay of Plenty area when in fact they do very little for Tauranga except try and fleece every tourist we get in to fund their over inflated ideas such as the five million dollar visitor center planned for the Mount.
