Police warn drivers to take extreme care following reports of a major oil or diesel spill on Matapihi Road this morning.

The oil on the wet road makes slippery driving conditions even worse, says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

The extensive spill is reported near the Bayfair end of Matapihi Road, near the Russley Drive intersection.

It is not known at this stage it the spill continues onto Maunganui Road at the Bayfair roundabout.

The spill was reported about 9.30am, and contractors have been called to clean it up.

'The council has been called, police are warning drivers to take extreme care as the road conditions are quite slippery, and with the weather currently it makes matters worse,” says Ian.
