Rain expected to clear later today

The weather forecast is for rain this morning, easing to a few showers this afternoon and light winds.

It's a two-clothing layer day today with a high of 18 and an overnight low of 13 degrees.

High tide is at 12.50pm and low tide is at 7.10pm. Sea temperature is 16 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about .3m and sunset tonight is at 7.40pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 5.30 and 7.30pm.

This day in NZ history, in 1943, troops from 8th Brigade, 3rd New Zealand Division, landed on Mono in the Treasury Islands to help clear the island of Japanese forces.

This was the first opposed landing by New Zealand troops since Gallipoli.

This day in world history in 1553 Michael Servetus, who discovered the pulmonary circulation of the blood, was burned for heresy in Switzerland.

In 1873 farmer Joseph F. Glidden applied for a patent on barbed wire. Glidden eventually received five patents and is generally considered to be the inventor of barbed wire.

In 1891 on this day D. B. Downing, inventor, was awarded a patent for the street letter (mail) box.

One hundred years ago today in 1917, 20,000 women marched in a suffrage parade in New York.

And twenty years ago today in 1997, stock markets crashed around the world over fears of a global economic meltdown.
