The weather forecast is for a mostly sunny day, but clouding over in the evening. Also westerlies.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 19 and an overnight low of 13 degrees. Humidity is 81 per cent.

High tide is at 11.30am and low tide is at 5.40pm. Sea temperature is 16 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about .3m and sunset tonight is at 7.38pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 4 and 6pm.

This day in NZ history, in In 1949 the Intellectually Handicapped Children's Parents' Association (IHCPA) – the forerunner to IHC – was formed. The common practice of the time was for people with intellectual disabilities to be placed in institutions away from their families and out of sight of the community.

IHC continues to promote real employment opportunities and also campaigns for children with disabilities to have full access to their local schools.

In 1971 was the end of the line for steam railways.

The Christchurch–Dunedin overnight express, headed by a JA-class locomotive, ran the last scheduled steam-hauled service on New Zealand Railways (NZR), bringing to an end 108 years of regular steam rail operations in this country.

New Zealand's rail system was predominantly steam-powered from 1863, when the first public railway opened in Christchurch, until the 1950s, when the transition to diesel power gathered momentum.

Our quote for today is from Roy T. Bennett who said "Stay strong, stay positive, and never give up.”
