Fine day on the cards for Tauranga

Today's weather forecast is for a fine day with southwesterlies, and chilly overnight.

It's a three-clothing layer day today with a high of 19 and an overnight low of 8 degrees.

High tide is at 12.40pm and low tide is at 6.50pm. Sea temperature is 15 degrees. There's an average sea swell of about 0.2m and sunset tonight is at 7.25pm.

If you're going fishing today the best fish bite time is between 6 and 8pm.

This day in NZ history, 248 years ago in 1769 Captain James Cook, sailing in HMS Bark Endeavour, sailed into Hawke's Bay.

One hundred years ago today in 1917, October 12 is remembered as New Zealand's ‘blackest day' at Passchendaele during World War 1.

In world history on this day Christopher Columbus and his crew landed in the Bahamas in 1492.
