Large slip blocks SH2

A large slip is blocking the highway through Waioeka Gorge,.

State Highway 2, through the Waioeka Gorge, is closed due to a large slip.

A 1000m3 slip is blocking the road at around the midway point. The road is expected to be closed until at least next week.

The Transport Agency is asking motorists to please avoid the area.

"Engineers will be on site Saturday morning to assess the situation and contractors are expected to be clearing the slip over the weekend if the weather allows," says the agency.

"People should use State Highway 35 as an alternative route. The Opotiki District Council and Gisborne District Council have closed the old Motu Road so it is not available as a detour."

People can check the road conditions by calling our 0800 4 HIGHWAYS number, using our websitewww.nzta.govt.nz/traffic or following us on Facebook and Twitter (@NZTAWaiBOP).

While an updated on the slip is expected tomorrow morning, the NZTA advise it could be closed for up to 4-5 days.

"The only alternative route is via SH35 as Motu Road is closed."

Our old world class "ministry of works" were actually better that the yanks mate, until Rogernomics destroyed them. Especially when the Italians worked with them. Just look at the Tongariro power project for a good example- a joint MOW/Italian effort. The Italians are still the world's best tunnelers and mountain road builders. Continually repairing Manawatu Gorge is flogging a dead horse. They should close it permanently and upgrade Pahiatua track which is a good road and virtually right alongside the gorge anyway. It's all about consultants and contractors these days - croc of shite.
