Mount speed limit now 30km/h

The new 30km/h speed limit for downtown Mount Maunganui comes into effect today.

The speed limit reduction is for all streets at Mount Maunganui north of Banks Avenue.

Tauranga City Council city transportation manager Martin Parkes says the change to the speed limit follows a successful trial of a 30km/h zone at the northern end of Marine Parade.

Martin says speed surveys show that traffic in these streets already travel at speeds closer to 30km/h than 50km/h.

Other speed limit changes include variable 40km/h zones outside the Papamoa Primary School and outside Bethlehem College.

The Totara Street speed limit has been reduced to 60km/h from 70km/h and Oropi Road is now 80km/h.

Havin a Laugh

You have got to be havin a laugh !!?? Sure during Summer, when the locals dont go down that way, you cannot travel at more than 30km/hr - what about during winter? Surely it is just a normal residential area??? What was the reasoning behind this stupid law change? I have a suspicion is just people trying to justify their employment!

Side streets?

Would like to know if this includes all the side streets from Banks Ave to the base of the Mt including the Mall. Also does this mean that all events including the Half iron man where cyclists have to do the same speed limit as do motorists.

30k trial

only cose there is giant speed humps but i do agree with 40km/h and also agree with crazysteed by they will have a permit to go over the speed limit, this city is choking and lowering Totara etc is just jambing everything up more as with the Papamoa limit to 60, but one way to fix this is to boot them all out next election and make sure u do

Efficient?

This implementation of the ridiculous limit is four weeks late. They set the thing to come into effect on 1st August. If a mere ratepayer was to be four weeks late doing something the council directed them to do there'd be all sorts of threats and unpleasantness. I've yet to see a good reason for doing it. What was the trial on Marine Parade about? For three quarters of the year you could fire a shotgun on The Mall and not hit anything. When it is busy, it's pretty self regulating. Didn't seem to be any consultation either. Smacks of bureaucrats with not enough work to do, just dreaming up little schemes.

Bad TCC by laws should be disobeyed

Let the Courts sort out this bull**** .A reasonable speed is 40kph and subject to traffic & road conditions that is the speed I shall continue to travel at. 30kph is ridiculous and there has been no public consultation and the only way to address it is by civil disobedience.

why did they do this?

It was not an accident blackspot? There was no danger before?

TCC by law unlawful ?

This bit of TCC garbage won't pass the legal test of reasonableness and is way out of line with motorists expectations on what the speed limit should be in this location.People/drivers should just continue as they were doing then defend any infringement notice and have the Courts throw it out.The costs and time involved will stop this TCC nonsense dead in its tracks. What volume of traffic for example is normally on these roads between 8pm and 8am ~ answer zilch !!

You will stick out like dogs ba**s

A tip for those motorists going lawfully about their business. After 9pm at night do not travel at 30kph you will be picked up by the cops for cruising loitering and casing out joints or reported by community night patrols. In all probability you will also be breath tested. It is your choice !!

ONCE A BAD BY LAW ALWAYS A BAD BY LAW -- IGNORE IT

NOBODY INCLUDING THE BUSES ARE OBEYING THIS BIT OF RUBBISH TCC & MR PARKES. NOW THE CHALLENGE IS TRY TO ENFORCE IT AND LOOK LIKE THE IDIOTS YOU ARE.
