Whakatane residents may have felt like the ground was moving under them last night, and they would have been right.
A 'moderate” earthquake was registered in the district at 8.46pm.
GeoNet says the earthquake was a 3.5 magnitude quake and was only 10km deep.
It struck 15km north-west of Whakatane.
GeoNet has also recorded a weak earthquake near White Island this morning.
The 2.6 quake struck at 7.30am, within 5km of the active volcano.
Did you feel anything?

There is one east of Wakatane, the ground will rise (hence earthquakes) arund the area as the pressure within changes. Nothing more than a normal event.
