A relatively shallow earthquake near White Island today follows deeper earthquakes near the Bay of Plenty's island volcano on Friday. Today's earthquake within 5km of the volcano was a 2.1 magnitude quake at a depth of 8km.

On Friday at 6.08pm Geonet recorded a 3.8 magnitude quake at a depth of 17km, 75km north of White Island.

It followed another deep quake minutes earlier at 5.57pm where a 3.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 45km depth , 20km north west of Whakatane.

There was another weak earthquake 20km north east of White Island on Friday morning at 3.06am. That was 3.3 magnitude at a depth of 25km.The aviation alert level on White Island remains at 1.
