When you've spent three-quarters of a century on this lovely floating rock we call Earth, you certainly deserve to make a song and dance about your birthday.
And that's exactly what international celebrity, star of stage and screen, TV presenter, and author of The Rocky Horror Show, the fabulous Richard O'Brien plans to do at Tauranga's Baycourt Addison Theatre on Friday, March 24.
Richard's 75 Years of Frock‘n'Roll extravaganza will be a glamourous night of humour and music, with all proceeds from the evening to be donated to The Starship Children's Hospital.
'I'm going to turn 75, yes this year. I know, it's hard to believe, and the word you're looking for is ‘gorgeous', that's true.
'Every cent of your ticket money is going to Starship Foundation, no profit whatsoever. Whatever the gross box office take is, that's what Starship will get.
'In other words, you give Starship a donation and you get a concert for nothing.”
Joining him on the evening will be well-known broadcaster and long-time friend Mark Sainsbury who'll act as 'The Interviewer” and grill him over the details of his life for the first half of show.
While the second half will see Richard joined on stage by a wonderful group of musicians like virtuoso pianist Grant Winterburn and Tauranga's favourite blues & roots band Kokomo.
Yes people, there will be much singing and plenty of dancing, so you better make sure you come dressed for the occasion.
'The best dressed will receive a little prize. I doodle…and the best dressed boy and the best dressed girl will get one of my doodles.
'There's not many seats left you know, so get stuck in.”
This upcoming concert continues a tradition for Richard who's long been a supporter of Starship Children's Hospital.
Five years ago he staged a similar event in at the Founders Theatre in Hamilton for his 70th birthday anniversary and, along with asking family, friends and fans to donate money to Starship in lieu of getting him a birthday gift, raised $32,000 for the national children's hospital.
Richard O'Brien presents 75 Years of Frock‘n'Roll at Baycourt's Addison Theatre in Tauranga on Friday, March 24, from 8pm. Tickets cost $38-$78 and are available online via Ticketek.
VIP Packages includes exclusive access to the Interval Lounge and an invitation to the 'Meet the Stars” After Party.
