The A1homes New Zealand Squash Open has attracted thousands of extra visitors through the doors of Mount Maunganui's Bayfair shopping centre.
| An extra 2200 people have walked through Bayfair's doors since the start of the A1homes New Zealand Squash Open. |
A specially designed glass squash court has been constructed in the centre of the mall as the venue for the event, which is one of the biggest on the international squash calendar.
Censors designed to monitor foot traffic through Bayfair are located at its main entrances and at various locations around the mall.
Figures from the censors show an extra 2200 visitors have flocked through Bayfair's doors during the first two qualifying days on August 11 and August 12.
The event has attracted eight female squash players ranked in the world's top ten.
Bayfair marketing manager Nina Rivett says there are three reasons why the shopping mall wanted to host the squash event.
The first was to attract spectators from across New Zealand and the world to the Western Bay, energise the Western Bay community and expose people to squash who had not had the opportunity before.
'It's also a chance to offer our customers a shopping experience that is a little bit different.
She says centre management has received a really good response from customers and there is a really good atmosphere in the centre.
'That's one of the things that's come through and people of all ages are stopping to watch the event, especially people with young families and it's really good for the young children to see,” says Nina.
