Record bus numbers

Three months into the new contract, Environment Bay of Plenty's Bay Hopper bus service is continuing to record increases in passenger numbers.
About 108,936 passenger rides were recorded for September according to EBOP.
September is the busiest month for passenger numbers recorded by EBOP.

Record bus passenger numbers were recorded by EBOP in September.

The previous record was October last year but September numbers exceeded it by more than 3700 passenger rides.
Environment Bay of Plenty transport committee Chairman Andrew von Dadelszen says it was particularly pleasing the new service was generating sustained passenger growth every month.
'These latest figures show people are making the move towards smarter transport options and that's something we aimed to encourage with the improved services and low floor buses being brought in.
This also shows that our intention of having more people on more buses, more often is being followed through,” says Andrew.
He says the best performing routes in the region are still the new routes, one and two, which connect Mount Maunganui, Tauranga City and Greerton.
'Those two services carried almost 32,000 passengers in September,” says Andrew.

Interesting to read about this increase in numbers on the buses. there must be some very full buses on the road somewhere, because almost every bus I see driving in or out of Tauranga CBD is less than a third full. This also applies to the buses that I see regularly travelling along Cameron Road!

It reads well that passenger numbers are up and records broken. Interesting to me would be the comparisons which demonstrate the real increase. I understand EBOP has increased the bus numbers, the frequency and coverage of services provided significantly. Is the dollar subsidy reducing as a result of the increased numbers? By what percentage has the passenger numbers per kilometer travelled by these buses increased? Cr. Murray Guy
