The Western Bay of Plenty can expect increased tourist numbers with Air New Zealand's plan to operate trans-Tasman flights from Rotorua Airport.
Air New Zealand has agreed to fly Airbus A-320 aircraft between Rotorua and Sydney twice per week, starting in December.
Rotorua Airport CEO George White says this result is the culmination of much hard work.
"We have been working towards this for nearly a decade. It has taken a while, but it has been important for us to get it right. We know we have the right airline on board for the best outcome for everyone involved," says George.
This announcement comes about a month after airline Pacific Blue agreed to fly trans-Tasman flights from Hamilton, starting in September.
Tourism Bay of Plenty general manager Tim Burgess says this presents a great opportunity for the Western Bay because for the first time there will be two international airports close to the region.
Air New Zealand's decision to begin operation out of Rotorua Airport in December is also significant says Tim.
'It's right in the middle of our tourism season and it's good to have people fly here at this time.”
Tim says there will likely be a direct benefit for the Western Bay, with some of the region's key attractions, like Kiwi 360, Spring Loaded and Comvita Visitor Centre just 20 minutes drive from the airport.
