A magnitude 5 earthqauke has been recorded near Te Kaha this morning.
GeoNet has issued an initial release desrcibing the 5.2 magnitude quake as strong.
It has now been reassessed to a magnitude 5 earthquake and is listed as "moderate".
The earthquake was 40km deep and hit around 10am.
It was centred 15km south-west of Te Kaha.
People are reporting feeling the quake, with posts to Facebook reading that it was felt in the Kaimai Range and Te Puke, as well as Whakatane.
