With a swashbuckling century, Blackcaps batsman Colin Munro blasted the New Zealand national side to a 47 run victory in their T20 match against Bangladesh in Mount Maunganui on Friday.
In front of a full house at Bay Oval, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and backed his bowlers by asking New Zealand to bat – a decision which paid immediate dividends with Luke Ronchi removed from the first ball of the game.
The visitors had further success and had the Blackcaps in some trouble, at three down for 46 runs.
But Munro then took control of his team's innings, smashing 101 runs off just 54 balls, to post just the fourth Blackcap T20 International century. His whirlwind innings contained seven fours and seven mighty blows over the picket fence.
Munro in tandem with New Zealand number five Tom Bruce put together a 123 run partnership that took the home side to 195 for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted overs.
Bruce finished his turn at bat with an unbeaten 59 that included five boundaries and a big six over the fence. Rubel Hossain was the best of the Bangladesh bowling attack taking three wickets for 37 runs.
Bangladesh were also in early trouble losing their first wickets with just two runs on the board.
While Sabbir Rahman (48) Soumyar Sakar (39) blazed away with the bat before being dismissed, the Blackcaps bowlers tightened the screws to grab the last four wickets for just four runs, as Bangladesh were bowled out for 148.
Ish Sodhi was in grand touch with the ball taking three wickets for 16 runs, with skipper Kane Williamson and Ben Wheeler rewarded with two wickets apiece as the New Zealand side got home to a 47 run victory.
The Blackcaps victory saw them take a unassailable two nil lead in the series – with the two sides meeting again at Bay Oval this Sunday for the last encounter in the three match contest.
