Nest fortified against the tide

Harry and Sophie’s nest has recently had its defences upgraded. Photo and video: Rosalie Liddle Crawford.

The oyster catcher nest on the main Mount beach has come through another high tide intact, thanks to a wall of sandbags placed on the seaward side.

The fortifications come after the nest was threatened by the high tide last week.

The pair of oyster catchers, known locally as Harry and Sophie, are taking turns sitting on the nest. One sits while the other goes up and down the beach looking for food.

Nearby are two pairs of dotterels, another threatened and nationally vulnerable New Zealand bird species.

The area is roped off and clearly marked with a sign, to help keep the birds safe during this busy time of year.

How about we build a little house for them to. This will only encourage them to continue to nest on one of NZ's busiest beaches, doesn't make sense to me.

Dog Owners KEEP OFF MAIN BEACH AND BOARDWALK!

Posted on 28-12-2016 13:24 | By yikes61

I watched from the end of Leisure Island this morning at 7.45 as two people with their lab sized dog walked along main beach, dog did a dump (owner picked it up) and then dog got to within fence erected around oyster catcher nest before man (from surf club watching swimmers?) standing oceanside of fence, advised (arms gesticulating signage) the dog owners that they arent allowed on main beach (or walkway) with dog. To their credit, couple put dog on lead and walked off beach, but this event does show how poor signage or people ignoring what poor signage is there can undo the goodwill of local environmentalists.

THOSE DARN OYSTER CATCHERS we had one out here on Gt Barrier Island that was wounded and even the local save the bird lady could not trap it! They are a lot more resielent than most people think and yes on the odd occasion people will stand on their nest but that is reality!Oh it is so nice to see a tweety bird have power over the human race!!!!!

Could be wrong.....
