Tourism Bay of Plenty CEO Tim Burgess says $100,000 has been generated locally to promote Tauranga and the Wesstern Bay of Plenty in Australia, which will be matched by another $100,000 from the marketing fund.
He says the money will be used to promote Tauranga to the increasing number of Australians travelling to the region via new trans-Tasman flights into Hamilton and Rotorua.
"It was announced by Prime Minister John Key, who is also the Minister of Tourism, to try and capitalise on the growing market of Australians visiting New Zealand."
Tourism Industry Association chief executive Tim Cossar says New Zealand is operating in a very competitive international marketplace and there is a need to do all we can to ensure our voice is heard.
'Joint venture marketing projects like this are the way of the future and the industry is keen to keep working with the government to maximise our marketing investment.”
TIA is encouraging all of the tourism industry to work together to make the joint venture a success.
'This money will help attract visitors to New Zealand and, even more importantly, their foreign exchange.”
'International visitors spend about $25 million every day of the year and that money is spent throughout communities, from attractions, accommodation and transport through to restaurants and wineries, bars, cinemas, theatres, retail outlets, supermarkets and hairdressers.”
