More people are using the bus services in Tauranga with the Bay of Plenty Regional Council showing an increase in passenger numbers with a record setting year.
The figures show 1.6 million people used Tauranga Bay Hopper buses, beating the previous record of 250,000 passengers.
The council's public transport sub-committee chairman, Douglas Owens, says the growth demonstrates the quality of the service on offer.
'Clearly more people are travelling on more buses, more often,” says Douglas.
'It's great to see – the next step is determining how we meet this high demand, particularly at peak times.”
The council's acting transport policy manager, Emlyn Hatch, says the growth is remarkable for a bus service established just 10 years ago.
'Every 100 days we carry over 450,000 passengers, and that's more people than we did in the whole of 2002. The figures are a terrific result.
'The continued increase in passenger numbers on Tauranga's buses was due to the reliability and convenience of the service,” he says.
'Rotorua's buses have also shown an increase in patronage.
'Usage is up 10 percent on last year's passenger numbers and an extra 74,000 passengers were carried in the past year.”

Unbelievable

How is it then that all the yellow buses I see either in Papamoa,The Mount and Tauranga are completly empty or only have one or two passengers ? This is at all times of the day. People I know and mix with make the same comments. Where do all these passengers suddenly come from ? Sounds to me as though someone is telling porkies to justify the number of busses on the roads.

the buses i catch used to be empty but the one i catch to work now is almost full and the one i catch home is always full. just hang around willow street and you'll see that heaps more people are using the bus. its good to see too. one of the few things done well by a local council. its very reliable.

we live in sunrise avenue and 3 routes go down our street. Most have some passengers and sometimes nearly full. People drive here and leave their cars to bus into town
Of course buse use will vary

Public transport is always busier at going to work and going home times. Naturally quieter other times. Some people can't seem to understand this.

Hard to find a bus that has anyoen in it on Cameron Road, they are sailing up and down all day, about a minute apart at times, that's 4383 people a day at a $1 towards the $18 million annual cost. 2002: - back then there was maybe 20 buses a day, now there are hundreds everywhere, it like being stuck in Pilot Bay with white pointer circling awaiting any chance to punce!

Unbelievable. the reason might be that you are at the beginning of the route. I wish i had the bus near me i have to walk 1klm to the nearest bus stop and I live in Brookfield.
MAYBE/ MAYBE NOT

But what I heard a few months ago was that RDC were suggesting the bus windows be tinted so the numbers using the buses couldn't be verified.Would also of course mirror the spectators thereby reflecting and increasing the apparent numbers on the buses.Good thinking !!

After reading some of these so called letters about our bus service I'm of the opinion these people only have to get on a bus &find out for themselves. We use the bus regular to all different locations & leave the car at home.People who make those comments about no people on the buses should get their head out of the sand once in a while & see the real world BY MACCA99
