Flooding across the Eastern Bay

A combination of heavy rain and the high tides over the past couple of days has caused extensive flooding to parts of the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

In one of the photos shared with SunLive, the boat ramp, pontoon and carpark completely next to the Opotiki Wharf were completely submerged following the heavy rain on Wednesday.

'I was actually standing on the wharf itself while taking the photo which is is situated close by where the Otara and Waioeka Rivers converge just a few blocks from the CBD. Fortunately massive stopbanks keep Opotiki safe these days,” says Opotiki local Stephen Benner.

'I've only been here a couple of years now, but a woman who saw me taking the photo and who's lived here most of life told me she'd never ever seen anything like it before.”

It was a similar story further north near Whakatane with flooding at the Rangitaiki River outlet at Thornton Beach.

Several photos posted to the Weather Modification Watch New Zealand Facebook page show the flooding which occurred during the high tide on Thursday morning.

'I think it's high tide but many have never seen the water this high before,” the post reads.
