A mini tornado left a path of destruction in Katikati, Te Puna and Ohope.

Callers to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline said trees had been uprooted and shed roofs torn off in the Western Bay of Plenty yesterday morning.

On its Facebook page, the Ohope Volunteer Fire Brigade reported their crew spent a 'wet and windy morning doing emergency repairs”.

'Our crew spent a wet and windy morning doing emergency repairs to a few houses in Ohope after what appears to be a mini tornado went through the Te Taiawatea Drive area,” read the post.

'This resulted in several uprooted trees, damaged fences, smashed windows and tiles missing from rooves. The amount of damage left a fairly good indication of the path the tornado took through the area.”

Today's weather is expected to be a lot calmer in the Bay.

Showers should be clearing up for most parts of the North Island during the morning, though it will take a bit longer to clear for Hawke's Bay and Gisborne, says MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn.

'Northwesterly winds are expected to pick up on Wednesday in eastern parts of the South Island, ahead of the front as it starts to progress northwards.

'Northwesterly winds dry the air out as it comes over the Alps and warm things up, meaning that temperatures could get into the mid-twenties for eastern parts of the South Island.

'Things will cool off as the front moves through bringing a southerly change and a few showers.” During the latter part of the week, another low pressure system approaches New Zealand.

'This low pressure system is likely to bring rain to most parts of the country later in the week,” says Claire.

'There is some uncertainty regarding the exact position of the low, and which areas could get the most persistent or heavier rain, as it moves over New Zealand. As always, we will be watching this system carefully as it develops, and you can stay updated at metservice.com.”
