Motor Trade Association (MTA) is encouraging Western Bay of Plenty apprentices to enter its apprentice of the year competition.

The winner of the competition in 2010, Brock Johnston, says this achievement has provided him with inspiration and changed the way he sees himself.

'Don't be afraid to give it a go, you might be surprised at how well you do,” says Brock.

'The competition is not nearly as daunting, with straight forward tasks and friendly judges.”

The awards aim to reward skills of apprentices and recognise employers who are investing in the future of the automotive industry.

Apprentices are challenged with fun and practical competitions along with a range of theory work, followed by a panel interview.

Brock says the opportunity to go to Melbourne and spend four days with the Greg Murphy Racing team as the prize for winning was the highlight of his year.

'Greg picked me up from the airport – we spent two days testing as a lead up to the race, then two days of racing.

'It was awesome being able to hang out in pit lane and spend time learning from the pros.”

The winner of the 2011 competition will go to Sandown (Melbourne) with the opportunity to work as part of the Greg Murphy Racing team, be granted $2000 cash and a potential study grant from MITO.

Applications are available here and close on July 31.
