Central Tauranga rebranded

Central city marketing organisation Mainstreet Tauranga is adopting a new strategy with logo and slogan to attract shoppers to the central business district.

The slogan: ‘Locals. Love it', is the idea of Tauranga based marketing company Tuskany Agency and is intended to put the ‘heart back in downtown Tauranga'.

The strategy was announced to the mayor, city councillors and more than 70 Mainstreet members at a meeting held at the Tauranga Art Gallery this week.

Tuskany brand strategist Sally Cooke says the strategy is about identifying what is unique in downtown Tauranga and creating an energised platform that showcases its diversity.

'We created this new logo and the ‘Locals. Love it!' slogan to capture the very essence of downtown Tauranga,” says Sally.

'The new logo and slogan will be used in a dynamic new marketing campaign that allows us to profile the many local identities who are passionate about this city and showcases the unique mix of retail, business, food, entertainment, art and culture we have downtown Tauranga.

'Our strategy also encourages collaboration between all city centre stakeholders and businesses and captures a new energy and passion which is what the board wanted and what the city needs.”

Mainstreet manager Kirby Weis says the new strategic direction is well received so far.

'There's a real energy and passion for this new vision,” says Kirby.

'It allows us to focus on our many benefits and showcases just what makes downtown Tauranga unique.

'Whether you want to shop, work, dine, be entertained, be inspired by our art and culture or just relax downtown Tauranga, we have a wealth of passionate locals waiting to meet your needs.”

The official public launch is scheduled for July 9.

Local's What??

Posted on 29-06-2011 13:48 | By DaKiwiBean

Someone has got it all wrong. The Local's "don't like it". In fact there are those who avoid going to the CBD. Just ask them who shop at the Mount and Bethlehem. My question is what is Kirby Weis now being paid to Do? How much is Tuskany charging for this? Not cheap I assume! Really, you got 70 Mainstreet members at the meeting. Hard to imagine, they have been pretty apathetic up to now.

Ha ha , good one.

Fortunately I don't work in the CBD. The CBD architecture is awful, the layout ill-thought, and the disconnection to the waterfront unforgivable. And, they make you pay parking fees for the displeasure of visiting the cbd. This name will change nothing.

Nothing but a distraction

This is utter garbage. DaKiwiBean is right and raises some good points (costs etc). But this is unfortunately what pointless people in pointless jobs do. They spend a great deal of our money on 'consultants' who are often no more than snake oil salesmen who have already identified a prime sucker with lots of someone else's money to waste. Meanwhile the council ramps up even more publicity to try and hide the fact that nothing meaningful has actually been achieved and the Emperor is as naked as the day that he was born.

How Much?

So how much did this "statagist" charge us for this "new stategic direction"

You must be kidding me

Golly lets just stand back and watch in amazement as money comes flooding in through the retailers tills following the launch of this stunning example of "branding". I mean that's what they retailers were crying out for wasn't it, a new logo! Mind you for the rumoured $100k budget for this project you'd expect some fairly staggering results... I'm sure they know what they're doing the mainstreet people... right? I mean they are experts... Personally I don't think I'm alone in thinking mainstreet would have served the retailers better by simply dividing up the $100k and handing in out to them.

There's Some locals that would love to meet you

Retailers that is. With your wallet open. Sorry, unless the CBD is under cover, has no traffic and no parking fees this ain't gonna happen!

Mainstreet

We the public use to hear a lot of positives come out of Mainstreet, but of late it seems it is the business hat. I believe it was formed for the businesses to get people to shop, well is it happening? If Tauranga follows in the footsteps of other places the CBD will die unless it is made vibrant and the Mainstreet organisers get out and market it. I have said many times I can remember as a child coming into town and thinking wow, when I had young childern they use to enjoy coming into town with their parents on Friday. What is there to offer for the young people any more. Locals Love it, perhaps it may get another name with Locals H--- it.

If I may be so picky...

'There's some locals...' Should be there are some locals. Hope you caught that before it went to print. And the icon up top of the new logo reminds me a lot of Microsoft Windows. Money well spent I'm sure...

Simply a "copy and Paste" then chnage the name $10,000 odd later I bet, yet another RORT, do they no realise that changing the name actually has no affect on the result, that actually for example having a car park is actualy important or more to the point "keeping the car parks" and adding to them will allow more people to go to the CBD

Posted on 29-06-2011 16:04 | By friendee

i pay $500 a year on my rates for this !!!

Get your facts right

Posted on 29-06-2011 16:20 | By Positive not negative

The general ratepayer does not pay for this - it comes from a targeted rate that is only applied to businesses in the CBD (retail and commercial).

the moneys not the issue

Posted on 29-06-2011 17:19 | By localyocal

The 100k budget is not the issue at all, well researched and excecuted campaigns can have a magical effect on businesses (just ask apple), poorly thought out and badly excecuted ones just make you go broke quicker. I don't know who to feel more humiliated for - the agency who presented the idea or the Mainstreet board who signed off on it. Come on Mt Weis you are spending real money, go get some quality professional advice and spend the money like it was your own and your businesses future depended on it...

Open to interpretation

Posted on 30-06-2011 08:59 | By CitizenX

After thinking about it for a few seconds my interpretation of this slogan is they are trying to change the identity of 'downtown' to 'locals', as in "lets all go down to the locals". The full stop after locals makes this seem more likely than the 'Locals Love It" interpretation that some are getting. It is obvious that locals don't love downtown or there would be no need for a waste of money re brand. However you interpret the meaning it the fact that most people can't immediately get the context of the fancy new slogan speaks volumes for how s#@t an idea it really is.

The dismal situation of Tauranga CBD is a creation of the Council. That's why the "Citizens Monitoring Council" will execute a well researched campaign to expose flawed, wasteful and crony administration of ALL local Councils. Join the movement.

negative/positive, i am on the fringe of the cbd, not a mid town shop, and yes, my rates include $500 mainstreet levy. for what? i still have the polo shirt from the last re brand!

I want to know who I sue

Posted on 30-06-2011 20:05 | By Nigel Barker

cos I just fell of my chair laughing. Not sure if the ribs are damaged through laughing or the fall. There "IS" general rate payer funding involved in the running of this fiasco. The challenge now is for someone to come prove me a 'liar'! WHO is this "Tauranga based marketing company Tuskany Agency"?? Who are the owners/directors etc?? Where and when, EVER, has a new logo & slogan achieved getting more people into town/cities/shopping centers?? Bet its not the slogan or logo that gets people to Bayfair or Bethlehem or Greerton or Papamoa. TCC funds are involved here so its another item for the attention of -Citizens Monitoring Council-

The best strategy would have been to invest some of this 'budget' on the 'rebrand' into doing some actual RESEARCH first. Go on the street and talk to the 'LOCALS' and find out what we actually want from our CBD. Then have some actual quantifiable data to rationalize investing in a re-brand. Which from the sounds of the comments above has not been done. At the end of the day a brand is NOT what the business says it is, it is what the CUSTOMER says it is. Talk to your customers first.

Get it right.

Unfortunately the logo etc is typical of what other regions would expect from us. Definitely 80's microsoft type square thing, comic sans italics, what ever else the other text is, HIDEOUS and embarrassing. It doesn't make me want to come and shop downtown, it's a false statement, local's love it, we don't but we would like to, that's why they have to pay money to bring us downtown through advertising. I believe it could have worked had they got it right. Had they spoken to us the community first. I have 3 children under 4, I do take them in to visit the art gallery every couple of months but it is much more of a mission than other shopping destinations. The parking sucks, there isn't anything to encourage mum's into the city, why bother? They could have promoted 'free parking on a Wednesday for mums and kids' to get people in shopping. Or families with pushchairs parking similar to Bayfair. As for public restrooms, that is another story with little ones needing to go, it doesn't work especially when they close toilets because they are too expensive to maintain...? Very disappointed with it. Sorry but it doesn't appeal to me because the problems are still there, poor parking, no bathrooms. The CBD should be the cultural hub, a place you want to go and see whats happening, music, fashion, specialty shops.. this logo and its tagline don't promote any of this.

The CBD needs car parking so like a new sign is going to fix that problem real fast ...

I SUPPORT THE CBD!

Posted on 01-07-2011 14:18 | By Brendan Herring - Creative Strategist, WAVE

It annoys me when stories like this focus in on a logo and refer to it as a brand. Branding projects are never limited to just logo design but it's always reported that way. Does the media not understand or do they do it on purpose to incite a reaction? I'm not familiar with the 'dynamic marketing plan' that forms the strategy for the campaign but one thing I know for sure is that a logo is only ever the thin edge of the wedge. Re-vitalising the CBD is an incredibly difficult thing to do and many things need to line up for it to be successful. But here is a strong group of passionate people out there investing their time and resources into doing something positive and that's a lot more than some of the moaners and whiners contributing to this blog. What Tauranga really needs is a positive attitude. Has Tuskany done a good job? I'm not sure, only time will tell. But I'm supporting them and if any of you really care about the success of Downtown Tauranga put your energy into supporting this initiative rather than trashing it before its begun.

CBD, TCC, STD,FITH - whats the difference

Posted on 02-07-2011 07:53 | By EYESPY

The new CBD brand / logo is simply ridiculous and whatever the cost it is too much.To suggest the funds used on this ill advised promotion do not come from TCC rates is rubbish it is funded by a CBD rate.Looks like Kirby Weis and Tuskany are the only supporters of this thing and I wonder why.It is the old story people spend other peoples money without a care in the world but ask them to front up and it is like Fort Knox.At a $100k the promotion would be a bad joke.

Because they don't know better!

Posted on 05-07-2011 20:52 | By Openknee8ted

Go to Melbourne, show them the sign and lets see if they jump on the plane to come shopping in Tauranga - yeah right!

Corruption

Posted on 31-07-2011 20:20 | By CBD business owner

Is what this rebrand has been derived from. As a business owner in the CBD it is unbelievable to find out what tactics some people will play in a selfish act to make themselves look good. However, as expected it isn't any better than what we had before and that is what happens when one individual pushes for change without experience or research to back it up. Wow factor? We think not. Waste of money? Absolutely.
