It's those opportunities you're not looking for which end up being the most rewarding, just ask Rotorua's Jordi Webber.
These past four years have been a bit of a whirlwind for the 22-year-old whose debut single ‘I'll Be Loving You' made onto the New Zealand iTunes top 100 chart in the first week since its release.
'I couldn't stop smiling bro. Knowing my friends and whānau were all listening to the radio waiting for my song to come on and then to hear my own mahi (work) on the radio, it was pretty mean.
'When I saw my song was sitting at #20 on iTunes only a couple of days after it had been released, I was like ‘whaaaaaaaaaat?'. I wasn't expecting it to get up there straight away, it's crazy.”
Astute readers will recognise Jordi not only as Cleo Magazine's 2013 Bachelor of the Year, but also as a former member of the Kiwi boy band Titanium which was formed from the winners a competition run by The Edge radio station's in 2012.
At the time Jordi was in his first year at university and had made a conscious decision to take every opportunity which popped up that year, 'any that came my way I gave it a crack”.
'I wanted to be an actor before joining Titanium. It was the band that sent me down this path and opened me up to the world of music and I loved it.
'Titanium helped me discover my love for singing, and that's why I'm still doing it, I love being able to share my passion through music. I love the stage and performing and working with other people.”
Jordi says ‘I'll Be Loving You' started off as a jam session he had about four months ago with Auckland-based producer and musician Em Basa, and it developed into a song in just a couple of hours.
Having 'nothing to lose” he then successfully submitted it to New Zealand On Air for funding and received $8000 to record both the single and its accompanying video which was released online on Sunday.
'I want to do old-school music, so I'm taking the old, making it funky and retro. The song sounds real MJ (Michael Jackson), JT (Justin Timberlake) kinda style.
''I'll Be loving You' is saying ‘I'm different to a lot of other guys'. It's a song about girls being respected, they should be treated right. It's about being a gentlemen really.
'Ever since its release it's been surreal bro. Everyone's loved it and shared it online, I've only gotten good feedback and that's been really, really wicked.”
