BOP Symphonia concert a huge hit

It was standing room only when the Bay of Plenty Symphonia took to the stage for its Family Concert at Otumoetai College on Sunday.

More than 500 concertgoers packed into the college's auditorium for the free concert which featured a most special and unusual guest conductor, the unique and acrobatic Mr Wizowski.

The hour long concert saw the Symphonia present a number of famous classics like Rossini's William Tell Overture (the Lone Ranger theme), exciting symphonic extracts from Beethoven and Dvorak, Ravel's Bolero and other lively pieces.

Symphonia spokesperson Maggie Gething says the concert ran fantastically and the orchestra would like to thank everyone who came along on Sunday.

'This may well have been the first time many members of our community had even had the chance to see and hear live classical instruments.

'It was standing room only and lots had to be turned away unfortunately due to lack of space, which was a shame and the Symphonia is really sorry for those people.”

Maggie says following Sunday's concert the Symphonia's been inundated with a flood of positive feedback from concertgoers.

'One comment we received was the concert was the perfect balance of mime, audience participation, slapstick humour and real live music.

'While another says Sunday's concert was best thing they'd seen yet in Tauranga, in terms of promoting live classical instruments and music to our tamariki.”

The Bay of Plenty Symphonia's final concert for 2016 will be Romancing The Tuba featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Dvorak at Baycourt on Sunday, November 27.
