Nomination of Olympic proportions

The New Zealander of the Year awards nominations are in, and the Bay's Lisa Carrington is on the list.

More than 200 nominations were received for the New Zealander of the Year Award, including Valerie Adams, Hamish Bond, Lydia Ko, Helen Clark and Lisa Carrington.

Bay local Lisa Carrington may win New Zealander of the Year 2016.

Lisa brought home a gold and a bronze medal from the recent Rio Olympic games.

She earned her gold medal in the K1 2000m kayaking and her bronze in the K1 500m kayaking.

Once nominations close on September 30, a judging panel will evaluate the nominations.

Manager for the New Zealander of the Year Award Glyn Taylor says the award lines up well with Olympic attitudes.

'The attributes of a New Zealander of the Year align with the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence. These are the values displayed by many New Zealanders everyday but these fine individuals remain unrecognised unless people submit a nomination.”

There are other categories in the awards, to include anyone and everyone. Nominations are still open for the following categories:

  • University of Auckland Young New Zealander of the Year (15-30 years)
  • Metlifecare Senior New Zealander of the Year (60 years and over)
  • Kiwibank New Zealand Local Hero of the Year
  • Sanitarium New Zealand Innovator of the Year
  • Mitre10 New Zealand Community of the Year

Nominations close at the end of this month and there is no better time to recognise the Kiwis doing great things for our country.
