It's going to be a massive day of rugby down with the finals of the Baywide Secondary Schools Rugby competitions taking place at Tauranga Domain today.

The Under-14, Under-15, 2nd XV, plus 3rd and 2nd division 1st XV finals are all serving as curtain raisers for the Steamers Mitre 10 season opener against Taranaki which kicks off at 2.35pm.

'It's going to be an exciting festival of Bay rugby down at the Tauranga Domain today,” says Bay of Plenty Ruby Union Secondary Schools manager Ian Parata.

Underway currently are the finals of U14 competition between Rotorua Boys High School Navy and Tauranga Boys' College Blue, and the U15 final between Te Wharekura O Mauao/Aquinas College and Tauranga Boys' 15A which are being played on number one and two fields at 10am.

They'll be followed by the 2nd XV final between Trident High School and Tauranga Boys' 5th XV and the 3rd Division 1st XV final between Tauhara College ad Tauranga Boys' 3rd XV, being played on the number two and three fields at 11.30am.

Then on the number one field the 2nd Division 1st XV final will see John Paul College battle it out against Rotorua Boys 3rd XV which kicks off at 12pm.

Ian says this year's Baywide Secondary Schools competition has been a hard fought battle across all the divisions.

'When the quality of the competition has been such that you have to wait until the last pool round to see who's going to qualify, it made that last round like a semi-finals day.

In most divisions, five to six teams could have made the semis, while in the U14 competition three of the teams were tied on points. It's been close and super competitive,” says Ian.
