One of America's most critically acclaimed underground punk bands will be bringing the noise to town next week.

As part of their first ever tour to New Zealand, New Jersey punk trio Screaming Females will tear up the stage down at Totara Street in Mount Maunganui on Thursday, August 18.

Next week's gig is part of the band's 12-show tour of Australasia and will see the American punkers share the stage with wonderfully raucous local band All Hail the Funkillers and Auckland five-piece act Bozo.

For the past 10 years the Screaming Females line-up of guitarist and vocalist Marissa Paternoster, bassist Michael Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty has remained unchanged.

Described by Spin Magazine as a mix of Dinosaur Jr. and Sleater-Kinney, over their career Screaming Females have had a ton of praise heaped upon them from the likes of Garbage's Shirley Manson, producer Steve Albini, and Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis.

'This is our first tour to New Zealand, we just want to play anywhere where people want to see us!” says the band speaking to SunLive from Australia.

Taking their name from a poem 'none of us remember what it was called or who it was by”, Screaming Females formed in New Brunswick, New Jersey, back in 2005 after Marissa and Mike, who were already jamming together, met Jarrett and 'made him join”.

The trio name 'Sheryl Crow” as their main shared influence, and if you've never heard a Screaming Females tune before they recommend you check out Savage Garden's ‘To the Moon and Back'.

Since then they've recorded six full-length albums, with their latest Rose Mountain released in 2015, two EP's and one live album recorded in 2014. They've also notched up more than one thousand shows in the northern hemisphere.

'What can a crowd expect from a Screaming Females gig? Improvisation, wild guitar solos, little to no banter, and technical difficulties,” says Screaming Females.
