College comments on ERO criticism

Otumoetai College acting principal Bruce Farthing is unsurprised by criticism from an Education Review Office report.

The ERO report explored how New Zealand schools spend the $200m they are allocated by the government for teacher development each year.
One of the report's findings stated 40 per cent of secondary schools need to spend funds for teacher development more efficiently.
Bruce says schools must act on the criticism and do better to train their teachers.
'The whole issue is about how students learn and not what students learn,” says Bruce.
Otumoetai College trains its teachers through a programme called Professional Learning.
'It's not just about giving teachers a set of activities. It's about saying, ‘Has the teacher really understood the process by which students learn?',” says Bruce.
He says Otumoetai College's latest ERO report was glowing and indicated the school was heading in the right direction.
