Heavy rains to hit the Coromandel

A combination of heavy rains and a king tide could make for a very wet evening for some areas of the Coromandel tonight.

The MetService has issued a severe weather watch for the peninsula tonight which is set to coincide with the king tide on the Eastern Coromandel at about 9pm.

The MetService says from this evening through to early Friday morning there is a possibility of localised heavy rain in some area which could see 15-25mm fall per hour and brings with it a flood risk to roads and properties in low-lying coastal areas across the peninsula.

A large low pressure system over the Tasman Sea that's moving slowly across the north Island over the next few days is bringing the heavy rain with it, but is expected to pass off the Coromandel early Friday morning.

'People are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, in case this watch is upgraded to a warning or further areas are added,” says the MetService.

Locals can also keep up to date on the weather in their patch by keeping an eye on the Thames-Coromandel District Council's Facebook page which will be providing regular updates.
