The council is looking at a $70 million plan to replace buildings in the central business district as part of a new civic centre re-design.
The first stage of the plan will see the current council building on Willow Street replaced.
Plans also include building a new civic administration building on Durham Street/Hamilton Street, a redeveloped Masonic Park/Civic Square and surrounding open space development.
In addition to this, a proposed library museum and performance venue for the staged development bumping the total cost estimated to be $91.8 million. Read more here.
SunLive reporter Rachel Noontook to the streets to see what people in the community thought about the proposed idea.
Watch the video above to see what they had to say.

Laughing at those fullas who say, there is no night life in Tauranga....on any given weekend, go down to the Strand and the eateries are JAM PACKED from 4pm onwards and there is NO PARKING after 5pm close to the Strand...I find something to do EVERY WEEKEND, and how the hell is this 90m plus people going to draw tourism to a Library, events centre probably used for locals....and periodically people might visit the Museum
Does anyone remember the Fan

How often does it get used, as a venue?

Personified, letting officials lose in the ratepayers bank account leads to this kind of crazy nut case spending of huge monies. In the real world the cost would be around $20m for the same thing and land included.
Hmmmm

There are any number of council owned properties where the ratepayers pay to have the grass mowed and yet we still have this idea that Council has to reside in the centre of town! The nearest underutilised grass growing site is Wharepai domain. Why not build there? There is extensive empty space next door in the domain, for anyone that feels the need to stretch their legs and the courthouse is just across the road and a short walk to the Latte vendors. Bring on some intelligent thinking and create a place that people want to visit rather than a place where people go to complain and that is vacant after 5pm and all weekend.

It should not go ahead. If by chance it does, it will have a cost blowout. How much will our rates jump too? Could we have some figures from Council on this matter please.

I fully support the upgrading and development of this area which as the fifth largest city needs to include a museum. However, question whether a council building needs to be part of it. This location for a public area, arts, entertainment and museum is crucial to attracting visitors.
waste of time

We do not need a museum, the same thing seen in every town! Leave the existing Theatre and build a bigger one as well if you must. Don't put council here get them out of town center
You're Dreamin !

$91 million won't go far when it is considered the museum basic cost alone was going to be around $23 million which you can guarantee would have blown out to nearer $30 million. I would estimate the total cost for this project with all it's elements included would be between $150 and $200 million, unless of course it is all going to be done on the cheap, AGAIN!
Public Say On Plans

Yeah right ! They may be permitted to have their say but these clowns will not take any notice unless what is said falls into line with what has already been decided. So many times plans have gone for public consultation and recommendations have been ignored by TCC and staff.
What???

All this has come about from a mould problem in the existing building. Surely it would have only cost a fraction of this to FIX THE PROBLEM. Just another way to con the ratepayer into more expense and even sneak in the long rejected museum.
