Update 1.49pm: Police has been called to the scene of a protest at a gold mining exploration site on Mt Karangahake, Coromandel and issued some of the protesters with trespass notices.
Protect Karangahake spokesman Duncan Shearer says Newcrest the company working on the site called police this afternoon.

He says five people from the group of about 15 people have been issued with trespass notices.
Earlier 12.02pm: Local conservation group Protect Karangahake has shut down Newcrest's gold exploration drilling rig on the side of Mt Karangahake in the Coromandel this morning.
The group arrived on site at 11am this morning and the drill rig was promptly turned off. Protect Karangahake's chairperson Duncan Shearer says the group is committed to protecting the mountain however necessary.
"Yesterday we were out pulling weeds, as we do every month, on the eastern slopes of our mountain and today we are on the other side protecting it from another invasive species, mining corporations."
"Karangahake is a precious ecological corridor and a visitor hot spot. Each year locals and tens of thousands of visitors come here to enjoy the regenerating native flora and fauna. And we think that is worth protecting," says Duncan.

He says the growing tourist industry will sustain the local community and economy much better long term than mining, which is a boom and bust industry.
"We realise that letting them sample is the start of a slippery slope, potentially leading to full scale mining and all the contamination and degradation that comes with it," Duncan says.

Last Tuesday, the group temporarily prevented Newcrest Mining Ltd from working on the site and delivered a letter to outline their position to the mining company.
On Newcrest's website it says through exploration, Newcrest seeks to identify and secure large mineral districts, or provinces, in order to establish long term mining operations, while enhancing the potential for further discoveries.
Two Australian mining companies have contracted Waihi company Alton Drilling to conduct an exploratory drilling programme in the area, a historical gold and silver mining region.
Supporters of Protect Karangahake, an organisation set up to prevent mining in the gorge, have vowed to disrupt activity to protect the mountain and its diverse ecology.

Yet another example of a very small group (I count about 15) of people preventing others from going about their legal business. Hardly a representation of public opinion. I bet they all drove their petrol guzzlers to get to the site and even wore their Gold rings etc.
Hmmmm

Only one group behaving appropriately and within the law.... And that's the miners. What a fantastic photo to highlight the stupidity of the protest, there is a huge expanse of bush and one tiny speck of activity, no doubt these people would be ecstatic if the full expanse of scenic vista was dotted with wind turbines, access roads and a solar panel farm?
Bravo to these protestors

They have my support and admiration. Sadly there are no laws against ecocide. Let the greedy corporations rule, legally plunder the environment, contribute to an uninhabitable planet for you, your children and grandchildren. And let's add a cliched attack on the credibility of the protestors. As Margaret Mead said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

It is the attitudes of these plonkers and yourself that are holding this country back. We live in a vast country that grows grass and you know what.... you can dig a bloody great hole and still grow grass on it when the digging finishes. How much of your pension or benefits are you willing to give up to the government if they are stopped from getting revenue for your eco-works and cycleways from business activities?? Dig the holes, make government revenue and employment and then regenerate the grass or trees, simple really and that's probably why the watermelons don't understand it.

Funny, people like you can't stand people standing up for their homes and the place that they live in. Newcrest Mining Company are only interested in defiling the natural beauty of Karangahake - I bet you live in the town - for money that they will take overseas back from wherever they have come from with limited employment opportunities for locals.
I bet....

if one of the protestors found some gold in a pristine stream, they would be first to dig it up and look for more.... I don't understand the protestors... gold found will still help our economy.... as long as it doesn't end up a huge open cut mine, if it is mostly underground, I am sure the animals wont mind.... nor the 10's of millions of tourists lol

The electronic device you typed your message on has gold plated circuits in it made from gold taken from mines like this one. People like you support mining by buying the products that come from mining then have a big whinge about mining. You cant have your cake and eat it too mate.
