Almost 45 minutes later, the region was struck by a much stronger quake that has been reported to have been felt throughout the country.
The 5.2 magnitude quake was only 27km deep.
'Both quakes occurred at a depth of about 27km. This means the shaking effects from these quakes were 'moderate' for the first, and 'strong' for the second,” says GeoNet.
'Apart from minor household contents damage, we do not expect any major impact from these quakes. A number of small aftershocks have followed the first quake.”
